Banquet is April 26th

Our banquet has been set for April 26th, at 2:00 pm at the Centre on Main in Leitchfield.

Elite 8 vs. West Jessamine

After winning our first game at Rupp Arena we played the West Jessamine Colts and fell by a score of 72-67. West Jessamine came into the game with a 27-8 record and having won 11 games in a row. We came in equally as hot having won 10 games in a row. However, our sluggish first half turned out to be too much to overcome and our season ended with a 26-7 record.

We never could get much going against West Jessamine's matchup zone in the first half and fell behind 12-8 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw us take our only lead of the game and our biggest lead was 5 points. However, West Jessamine went on a 12-2 run at the end of the 2nd quarter to take a 5 point lead at halftime. Our inability to make any shots from the perimeter played a big part in our struggles as well as losing Bennett Skaggs early in the first quarter with 2 fouls. Aaron Deviney scored 8 of his 14 points in the first half to keep us close and Seth Bratcher scored all 5 of his points in the second quarter.

The 3rd quarter was very important as we needed to make a run at them because they are so good at controlling tempo in the 4th quarter. We didn't make the run we needed and was down by 7 going into the 4th quarter. The first possession of the first quarter West Jessamine took 45 seconds off the clock and it was at that point we decided to start fouling to create a faster tempo and more possessions. The strategy actually worked for us as we scored 33 points in the quarter and made 8-15 3 point field goals. However, West Jessamine also made their free throws. Going into the game West Jessamine was shooting 66% as a team from the line with a several regulars below 50%. However, those players stepped up and made their foul shots and they were able to withstand our rally.

For the game we shot 24-60 for 40% and 12-34 from the 3 point line for 35%. West Jessamine shot 21-37 from the field for 56% and 26-36 from the line for 72%. The rebounding totals were 31 for West Jessamine and 30 for us. We had 9 second chance points to West Jessamine's 6. West Jessamine committed 11 turnovers and we committed 8.

Aaron Deviney was named the K105 player of the game for his 14 points and 10 rebounds. Travis Johnston was selected to the All Tournament team after the game. Travis scored 26 points in the loss to the Colts.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-26
Aaron Deviney-14
Wes Smith-9
Tyler Saltsman-7
Seth Bratcher-5
Lance Buckler-4
Bennett Skaggs-2

State Tournament vs Adair County

On Wednesday, March 18, we played Adair County in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen. Adair County represented the 5th region with a 26-7 record. We came into the game with a 25-6 record.

We set the tone early in the game by jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Lance Buckler scored all 7 of his points in the first quarter. We led 15-5 at the end of 1 quarter. Our defense was stellar and completely took them out of their offense. We switched from our 3-2 matchup zone, man to man, and our switching man to man defenses.

Neither team could get much going offensively in the second quarter but Seth Bratcher scored 4 points and we led 23-12 at the half.

The 3rd quarter was the only quarter that Adair Co. scored in double figures, they scored 12 points to our 9 and our lead was 32-24 going into the 4th quarter. We outscored Adair 13-9 in the 4th quarter to pick up Grayson County's first ever win at the state tournament. The final score was 45-33.

For the game we shot 14-38 from the field for 37% and 14-26 from the line for 54%. Adair Co. shot 13-39 for 33% and 5-11 from the line for 46%. Big difference in the game came with us out rebounding Adair Co. 33-25 and we scored 13 second chance points to Adair's 3.

This game was a great defensive effort on our part and also allowed us to get everyone playing time on Rupp Arena's floor.

3rd Region Champs!!

On Monday, March 9, we won the 3rd Region Championship by defeating the Muhlenberg North Stars 69-64. It will be only the 3rd time in our school's history that we will be the 3rd region's representative at Rupp Arena for the Sweet Sixteen.

The first quarter was an evenly played game but North took a 17-13 lead on a 5 point play at the end the quarter. North's Jordan McElwain hit a 3 and we were called for a foul on the rebound. The foul was our 7 team foul and resulted in two free throws for Joe Gabbard.

In the second quarter our defense was great and held North to just 5 points. With the score 22-17 with 3 minutes to play in the half we made 4 3's to close out the quarter on a 12-0 run and led at halftime by the score of 29-22. Travis Johnston scored 11 first half points and Wes Smith added 9.

The 3rd quarter saw us play North even and we led 47-40 going into the 4th quarter. Tyler Saltsman hit 2 big 3's in the 3rd and finished the quarter with 8 points.

During the 4th quarter the biggest play of the night came with us leading 55-52 with about 3 minutes to play. Tyler Saltsman missed a 3 pointer but Bennett Skaggs ran down the long rebound for us to retain possession. Wes Smith received the reverse pass and drained a 3 pointer right in front of the North student section. That shot allowed us to stop North's momentum and allowed us to regain our 2 possession lead. Wes's 3 was the last field goal we would need as we calmly stepped up to the line and nailed free throw after free throw. We tell our kids all the time that free throws and layups win games and it certainly won us the championship. During the 4th quarter we made 17-20 including 9-10 from Travis, 4-4 from Bennett, 2-2 from Wes and 2-2 from Aaron Deviney. For the game we made 22-26 free throws and 9 3 pointers in 19 attempts. North hit 15-24 free throws and 7 of 16 3's.

Chosen for the all tournament team were: Travis Johnston, Bennett Skaggs, Wes Smith and Aaron Deviney.

For the game Travis Johnston led us with 22 points and 8 assists while Tyler Saltsman had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler was chosen as Player of the Game.

Wes Smith and Bennett Skaggs again led us defensively and their leadership was incredible for us.

Semi-finals vs. Ohio County

In our regional semi-final match up with Ohio Co. we rode our defense again to a 60-36 victory. The win puts us in the championship game for only the 3rd time in school history.

We once again got off to a fast start as Wes Smith scored the first 5 points of the game and Travis Johnston scored 7 points in the quarter to stake us to a 14-9 first quarter lead. Ohio County played much better offensively in the second quarter exploiting their size advantage inside but Travis scored 7 points in the quarter and Tyler Saltsman scored 4 for us to extend our lead to 28-22 at the half.

Our defense was the difference in the second half. Ohio Co. shot 10-17 in the first half but just 5-24 in the second half. Travis scored 8 points in the quarter and Bennett Skaggs added 4 and we took a 43-29 lead into the 4th. During the 4th quarter we were able to spread Ohio County out offensively and get shots inside the paint. We outscored Ohio 17-7 in the 4th quarter.

For the game we shot 24-48 from the field for 50% and Ohio Co. shot 15-43 for 35%. We pulled down 26 rebounds and committed 12 turnovers to Ohio Co.'s 19 rebounds and 21 turnovers.

Regional Tournament

In the opening round of the 3rd region basketball tournament we played host to the Apollo Eagles. We had beaten the Eagles 2 times during the season, once in our tournament championship game and then a week later at their place. Both games were very close but we made enough plays down the stretch to come out with victories.

Both teams came out blistering the nets as Travis Johnston hit 4 3's pointers and Wes Smith hit 1 in the first quarter. Apollo also made 3 3's in the first quarter. We cooled a bit in the second quarter but Apollo remained hot from behind the arc and took a 30-29 halftime lead.

The 3rd quarter was the best execution we have had on the year getting layups and open jumpers. Aaron Deviney hit 2 3 pointers and we consistently got backdoor layups in our offense. We scored 23 points in the quarter to take a 12 point lead into the 4th quarter.

Our defense really carried us in the 4th quarter by keeping De-Lon Butler out of the lane and taking away shots by Trace Ewing. It was a tremendous defensive effort by our entire team but Wes Smith and Bennett Skaggs were unbelievable in their individual assignments. We would not have won this game without those efforts.

We shot 24-48 from the field for 50% and 11-20 from the 3 point line. Apollo shot 19-39 for 52%. We out rebounded Apollo 25-16. Apollo turned the ball over 10 times and we turned it over 3.

Travis Johnston was chosen Player of the Game by scoring 29 points and getting 6 assists. Aaron Deviney also played his best game of the year with 15 points, 3 assists and leading us with 5 rebounds.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-29

District Championship

We won our 4th consecutive district title by defeating the Trinity Raiders 61-28 on Friday, Feb. 27th.

We got off to a rocky start and led 9-8 at the end of one quarter but a big second quarter propelled us to a 30-13 halftime lead. We got a big lift from our bench with Seth Bratcher making 2 3's in a row against Trinity's zone. We also got out in transition several times after forcing numerous turnovers. The second half went our way as well as we held Trinity to single digits in every quarter. The 28 points we gave up was a season low and one of our best defensive performances in a long time. Our rotations were quick and our ball pressure took Trinity out of their offense completely.

Wes Smith also return from his ankle injury and provided us with 12 big minutes off the bench. He had missed the previous 5 games.

Congrats to our seniors for never losing in the district tourney and being champions of the 12th district for the 4th time!!
