Bowling Green

On Tuesday night we traveled to Bowling Green to play the Purples who had a record of 14-3 going into the game. We played very poorly and lost 72-59. It was only the second time all year we gave up over 60 points (77 to Seneca in double overtime). It was a bad offensive and defensive game for us.

The difference in the game was Bowling Green's outside shooting and our inability to keep them out of the lane. The only bright spots for our team was the return of Wes Smith and we also found our free throw stroke again by making 16-21, led by Bennett Skaggs' 5-5 from the line.

Aaron Deviney was chosen Player of the Game for his 14 points and 6 rebounds. Travis Johnston led the team with 17 points, 5 assists and 4 steals.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-17
Aaron Deviney-14
Bennett Skaggs-9

Game 2 vs. Edmonson County

In front of our biggest home crowd of the year we defeated Edmonson County 49-47. We played our 2nd game in a row without Wes Smith and continued to struggle without him in our lineup. The game was close throughout and neither team led by more than 5. The score was much lower than we like it but it usually is when we play Edmonson County because each possession is so highly contested.

The game was tied at 47-47 with 2:05 to play and we decided to hold the ball for the last shot. Edmonson County was sagging in their man to man and allowed us to hold the ball for the last possession. We called timeout with 6.6 seconds to play. When we inbounded the ball to Travis, we went to our 1-4 low set and just let Travis go one on one. His only instructions was to make sure we had the last shot. The worst case scenario for us was overtime and we felt good being at home if that was the case. Travis drove to about 12 feet and shot an off balanced jumper against very good defense by Edmonson's Aaron Duncan. The result was nothing but net and we escaped at the buzzer with a 2 point win.

For the game we shot 19-48 for 39% and was 8-12 from the line for 68%. Edmonson County shot 17-36 for 47% and 10-14 from the line for 71%. The difference in the game was rebounding as we pulled down 28 rebounds to 22 for EC, but we had 10 offensive rebounds to their 3. Besides the last shot by Travis, the two biggest plays were offensive put backs by Dustin Thomas and Hunter Gary in the 4th quarter. We were led in rebounding by Bennett Skaggs with 6 while Travis Johnston, Aaron Deviney, Lance Buckler and Seth Bratcher had 4 each. We committed 10 turnovers to Edmonson County's 13.

Travis Johnston was chosen Player of the Game by scoring 22 points, dishing out 5 assists and coming up with 4 steals.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-22
Bennett Skaggs-12
Aaron Deviney-9
Lance Buckler-2
Dustin Thomas-2
Hunter Gary-2

This win guarantees us the #1 seed in the district tournament.

Trinity

In our first game of the year vs. Trinity we defeated the Raiders 62-46 at GCHS. We got off to a blazing start and led 22-9 at the end of the first period. However, in the first period we lost Wes Smith a minute into the game when he went up for a rebound and landed on his back. He left the floor under his own power but bruised his lower back and did not return. His status for Friday's game vs. Edmonson is still questionable.

We shot a 23-55 from the floor for 42% and 11-18 from the line for 61%. Trinity shot 16-40 for 40% and 11-18 from the line. We had 29 rebounds to Trinity's 25 but we won the offensive rebounding battle 12-5.

For the game we shot 27-55 for 49% but were only 4 of 21 from the 3 point line for 19%. We didn't shoot as well as normal from the free throw either as we were 16-24 for 67%. In the second half neither team could get much offense going, but we built a 37-32 lead with about 2 minutes to play but committed 4 consecutive turnovers to give Apollo a chance to tie and to send the game into overtime. In the first overtime period we again had a chance to win the game but couldn't convert at the end. In the second overtime Apollo took a 1 point lead with 20 seconds left but Bennett Skaggs was fouled with 13 seconds to go and stepped to the line and made both free throws. We dropped back into a zone and Apollo fired a 3 that was off and Bennett rebounded the ball and was fouled with 2 seconds left and we escaped with the victory.
