We got off to a tremendous start by winning the 1st quarter 28-0. We had the opportunity to play everyone in the 1st half and continued to do so the entire game. We had balanced scoring led by Ethan Saltsman with 12, Brady Clemons with 10, followed by Trey's 9 and Ollie's 8. Two of our young kids Brett Majors and Lane Rackley scored 7 and 6 respectively. Ollie led with 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.Coach Johnstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607937586994949048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2532923844390731931.post-46259573037464957932012-01-10T09:13:00.000-06:002012-01-10T09:13:57.578-06:002-1 Last WeekIn our 3 games last week we won 2 and lost 1. Our loss coming to Apollo High School by the score of 54-51. Our two wins came against district rival Butler Co. 63-51 and Cumberland County 81-50.

A bad shooting night did us in vs a very big and talented Apollo team. We were 5-29 from the 3 point line and shot 32% from the field. We also had an off night at the free throw line by making 6 of our 13 attempts. We forced Apollo into 29 turnovers and that allowed us to stay in the game. We played from behind most of the night and with 2:30 to play the score was tied 50-50. We couldn't convert on our end and Apollo scored a basket and hit 2 free throws for their final 4 points. We had the ball with a chance to tie with a 3 at the buzzer but did not get off a good shot. Ollie Roberts and Ethan Saltsman had 14 points each to lead us.

BUTLER COUNTY:

On Friday, Jan. 6th we traveled to Morgantown to play our second game against Butler Co. We defeated Butler by 20 in the season opener at our place, but was looking for a much tougher game on the road. We got off to a great start and build an 11 point lead at the end of the 1st quarter and the game was never very close after that. We made shots, rebounded and played good defense for most of the night and coasted to a win on the road. We were up 20 with about 3 minutes to play and we subbed in our younger players and they cut the lead to 12. We had very good balance with Ollie and Ethan S. leading us with 12 points, Trey Tinsley score 11 and Ryne Tinsley pitched in with 10. Brady Clemons had 7, followed by Ethan Meredith and Bret Johnston with 5 a piece. We had 16 assists on the night with Ollie and Brady getting 4 a piece to lead our team. We out rebounded Butler 35-28 on the night and our 2 big guys led us, Ollie with 10 and Ethan Saltsman with 8. Brady continued his fine all around play by leading us in steals with 4.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY:

We participated in the McDonald's Hoopin it Up Classic at Adair County on Saturday, Jan. 7th. We defeated Cumberland County 81-50. We were very sloppy early and was down 35-30 at the half with our jv team getting most of the playing time in the 1st half. Our younger kids played very hard and kept us in the game while our varsity guys had time to set and watch and think about their lack of effort on the floor. The second half was a much different story as we outscored Cumberland 51-15 and won going away by 31 points. Ollie Roberts scored 21 points and collected 8 rebounds to lead us in both categories. Trey followed Ollie with 14 and Ethan Meredith chipped in with 11 (all coming in the second half). Brady Clemons led with 5 assists. We were guaranteed 4 games and came away with a 4-0 record and our second tournament championship over Christmas break.

Clinton County came into our game with a 10-0 record and impressive wins over Warren Central and Russell County (both will compete for the 4th region championship). We got off to a great start and led by 6 after the 1st period. At the half we led by 3, 24-21, as we struggled to make shots for the entire period. The 3rd quarter ended with a 36-36 tie but then we scored the first 9 points in the 4th quarter and stretched the lead out to 12 with 3 minutes to play. We did not handle the last 3 minutes very well and we turned it over and gave them opportunities by missing some free throws. Fortunately, we made just enough from the line to come away with the victory. We were lead in scoring by Ethan Saltsman's 16, followed by Ollie Roberts' 13 and Trey Tinsley's 11. Ethan Meredith contributed 8 points and some big free throws down the stretch. Ollie and Ethan shared the rebounding lead with 7 and Ollie and Brady shared the assists lead with 5.

Our second game was against the tournament host Allen Co. We dominated this game inside with our big guys. Ethan and Ollie both posted double doubles. Ethan scored 20 and pulled down 15 rebounds while Ollie scored 20 and pulled down 10 rebounds. Brady Clemons continued his great play by dishing out 7 assists and pulling down 5 rebounds. We won the game 67-52.

Heath High School brought a different challenge for us with their inside game being as potent as ours but we won the game 66-53. We knew our guards would have to be a factor in this game and they were as Ethan Meredith scored 14 points and Brady Clemons scored 10 and also had 5 assists to lead us. Ethan Saltsman scored 18 and he also had 8 rebounds to lead our team.

In the last game of the tournament we played South Warren. We jumped out to a good lead only to see it go back and forth in the second quarter. We led by 3 at the half and stretched it out to a 10 point lead at the end of the 3rd. Our defense was outstanding in the second half as we held South Warren to 10 total points in the half. We won the game 51-34. Ethan Saltsman and Brady Clemons were our 2 leading scorers with 14 and 10 respectively. We had good balance in this game with Ryne and Ollie getting 8 points each and Trey getting 6 and Ethan Meredith getting 5.

Ethan Saltsman was chosen as the Outstanding Player of the Tournament. He was joined by Ollie Roberts and Brady Clemons on the all tournament team.
We opened up tournament play against traditional power and perennial top 10 team in Covington Holmes. Holmes will be the most athletic team we will see all year and we played our best game of the year to come away with a 65-57 victory. We build a 12 point lead at half only to see it completely disappear in the 3rd quarter. However, we responded very well in the 4th quarter and build the lead by to double digits before winning by 8. We were led in scoring by Ollie Roberts with 26 and he also collected 8 rebounds to lead us in that category. Other double figure scorers for the game were Trey Tinsley with 13 (hitting 3 3 pointers) and Ethan Meredith with 11. Brady Clemons did not score in the game but had 5 assists to lead us.

In the semi-final game against Greenwood it was a completely different game. It was a slug fest from the very beginning and we were fortunate to get out with a hard fought win 47-39. We had 3 double figures scorers this game and was led by Ollie Roberts' 23, followed by Ethan Saltsman and Trey Tinsley with 11. Ollie pulled down 14 rebounds to lead us and also tied with Ethan Saltsman for the assists lead with 3.

Championship Game:

We had a rematch with tournament host Central Hardin for the championship and this time we came out on top by the score of 57-42. After being down 5 at the half, we played great defense in the second half and did not give up an offensive rebound to pull away in the 3rd quarter. We led 42-33 going into the last period. We again held Central to a single digit quarter to pull way with the 15 point win. We had a very balanced scoring attack but we were led for the 4th game in a row by Ollie Roberts who scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds. Ethan Saltsman narrowly missed a double double by scoring 13 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. Brady Clemons scored 9, followed by Ryne Tinsley with 6, Trey Tinsley with 5 and Ethan Meredith with 4.
Ollie Roberts was chosen as the Outstanding Player of the Tournament and was joined on the all tournament team by Ethan Saltsman, Brady Clemons and Ethan Meredith. On Tuesday, Dec. 6, we traveled to Central Hardin to play our first road game of the year. We lost 63-52 to the Bruins. We lost this game because of our inability to rebound the ball and get stops on the defensive end against their post players. We were out rebounded 32-19 including giving up 12 offensive rebounds which resulted in 14 second chance points. We only had 3 offensive rebounds for the night. We continued to shoot the ball well from 2 point range by hitting 14/24 for 58%, but only made 3/10 from the 3 point line. Central Hardin made 22/46 from the field for 48% and 8/18 from 3 point territory for 44%.
We were led by Ollie Roberts' 19 points. Also in double figures were Brady Clemons with 12 and Ethan Saltsman with 10.

BRECK COUNTY:

On Thursday, Dec. 8th we played at home against the Breck Co. Tigers. These games are always close as they are one of our biggest rivals in the region. We came away with a hard fought 58-52 win. We executed much better down the stretch in this game and that allowed us to come away with a victory. For the game we shot 43% by hitting 20/47 from the field for 43%, including 6/18 from the 3 point line for 33%. We out rebounded Breck Co. by 1, 26-25 but we doubled them up on offensive rebounds by getting 8 and only giving up 4. None of those 4 offensive rebounds came in the second half. We forced 20 turnovers and committed 14 of our own.

We were led in scoring by Ollie Roberts with 15, Brady Clemons with 11 and Ryne Tinsley with 10. Ollie made it a double double by getting 10 rebounds to lead us.

EDMONSON COUNTY GAME:

In our first game of the season against our biggest rival we came away with a 59-44 win. We came out very sluggish and fell behind early but closed out the quarter strong to be down 1, 12-11 after the first quarter. The second quarter was the difference in the game as we connected on 11-12 field goal attempts while holding the Wildcats to 5 points in the quarter. We outscored them 24-5 to take command of the game. In the second half we were outscored 26-24 but we played a lot of the last quarter with younger players in the game.

For the game we shot 23/42 from the field for 55% and hit 6/12 from the 3 point line. We also won the rebounding battle by a convincing 29-18 advantage. We had 10 offensive rebounds to 5 for the Wildcats. We forced 21 turnovers and committed 13 of our own.

For the game we had 3 players in double figures, led by Ollie Roberts with 14, followed by Ethan Saltsman with 12 and Brady Clemons with 11. Ollie and Ethan also led us with 7 rebounds and 6 respectively.
The Panthers are also one of the teams picked ahead of us in the pre-season rankings. We got down early 11-3 but battled back to be down 16-11 at the end of the 1st quarter. Our defense was excellent for the first 6 minutes of the 2nd quarter which allowed us to go on a 19-4 run to take a 30-20 lead. However, we relaxed too soon and gave up 10 consecutive points to go into the locker room tied at 30-30.

In the 3rd quarter, we changed to our switching man to man defense and caused some problems for Daviess Co., winning the 3rd quarter 17-6 to talk an 11 point lead into the final quarter. Our lead fell to 9 points midway through the quarter but we quickly stretched it back up to win by 14 points. The key to the game was handling their full court pressure. We committed 15 turnovers but also scored a lot of points off our press offense as we consistently attacked the backside of the press for layups or open jumpers. Transition defense and transition offense was important to our win as we beat the Panthers down the floor several times throughout the game.

We shot 50% from the field but only made 4 3 pointers for the game. We shot 66% from the free throw line, pulled down 26 rebounds and had 15 assists for the game. Daviess Co. shot 39% for the game and made 6/30 3 point attempts. Daviess Co. committed 17 turnovers and had 29 rebounds.

We were led by Trey Tinsley's 20 points, followed by Ollie Robert's 18. Ethan Meredith had double figures with 10 (all coming in the second half). Ethan Saltsman had 8 and Brady Clemons scored 9. Ollie led us with 11 rebounds and also led in assists with 5. The McDonald's Player of the Game was 6'1 senior guard Ethan Meredith, who played very well in the second half after sitting most of the first half in foul trouble.

Next game will be an out of region team as we travel to Central Hardin. Jv game will start at 5:30 and the varsity will begin at 7:00 cst. Bears. This was an important game for us not only to get our season off to a great start but to put us at 1-0 in district play. We got off to a fast start and won the 1st quarter 18-11. We had six players score in the quarter led by 6'4 junior forward Ethan Saltsman's 6. Our good defensive effort continued as we built a 35-22 lead going into the locker room at the half.

We were a little sluggish coming out of the locker room but won the quarter to go up by 16 points, 53-37. We pulled away in the 4th quarter by again holding the Bears to just 11 points in the final quarter and we won by 20.

For the game we shot 57% from the field and 8/19 from the 3 point line. We struggled from the free throw line shooting just 50% but fortunately with the big lead it didn't come back to hurt us. Butler Co. shot 17/53 from the field for 32% and just 4/23 from the 3 point line. We won the rebounding battle 35-30 but we did give up 13 offensive rebounds. We committed 16 turnovers to Butler Co.'s 14.

We were led in scoring by junior guard Trey Tinsley's 19 points and followed by Ollie Roberts, Brady Clemons, Ethan Saltsman and Ethan Meredith, all with 12 points. Leading rebounder was Ethan Saltsman with 10. Ollie Roberts led with 9 assists and the team had 20 for the game. The McDonald's Player of the Game was 6'5 senior Ollie Roberts who had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals. In our first scrimmage game we had to come from 15 points behind to win by 3 over Mclean Co. 61-58. Defensively, we struggled stopping the 3 pointer as Mclean Co. made 11-25. We forced several second half turnovers and came back to win. We were led by Ollie Roberts with 20 points. Brady Clemons led us with 5 assists and Ethan Saltsman led us with 7 rebounds.

In our second scrimmage we beat South Warren 53-43. Our defense was much better in this game but we struggled offensively. We only made 3-12 from behind the arc and shot 50% from the free throw line. We were led by Ethan Saltsman's 16 points and 7 rebounds. Ollie Roberts led us with 5 assists and also shared the steals lead with Brady Clemons with 4 a piece. We forced SW into 24 turnovers but committed 17 ourselves.
We came away with our 5th straight district title by beating the Wildcats 40-25. It was a very physical, defensive oriented game from the beginning. We led 7-5 at the end of the 1st quarter and took an 18-14 lead in at the half. In the 3rd quarter our defense was relentless and we pushed ahead with a 15-6 run to lead 33-20 at the end of the 3rd quarter. We again relied our on defense in the 4th quarter to win this game 40-25.

For the game we shot 15-51 or 30% and 8-13 from the free throw line. Edmonson County hit 10-40 for the game for 25% and 3-5 from the foul line. We pulled down 37 rebounds to their 24 but the big advantage was our 14 offensive rebounds to their 7. We committed 8 turnovers while the Wildcats committed 15.

For the game Aaron Deviney was chosen K105 Player of the Game for his 9 points and 11 rebounds. Travis Johnston was the only cougar in double figures with 12 points and 4 assists.
Tyler Saltsman turned in a great performance with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Hunter Gary was great on the defensive end all night and scored 5 points and had 7 rebounds.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-12
Aaron Deviney-9
Tyler Saltsman-9
Hunter Gary-5
Brady Clemons-4
Dustin Thomas-1Coach Johnstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607937586994949048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2532923844390731931.post-10659688567776082172010-02-25T11:19:00.002-06:002010-02-25T11:32:54.546-06:001st round of the District TournamentOn Tuesday, Feb. 23rd we played Trinity High School in the first round of the 12th district tournament. We came away with a 67-55 win in Morgantown. The win set up a district championship game vs Edmonson Co. on Thursday, Feb. 25th at 7:00pm.

We came out very well offensively in the first half with Travis Johnston scoring 5 points in a row, but our defense was not very good and allowed a lot of easy points to Trinity. After our quick start offensively, Trinity switched to a zone defense and we couldn't make many 3's. We did manage to take a 17-14 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The second quarter was pretty ugly and at the half we lead 25-21. Tyler Saltsman scored 7 points in the 1st half to lead us going to halftime. The big reason we were up at half was the offensive rebounding done by Aaron Deviney and Dustin Thomas. We had 12 offensive rebounds in the first half.

In the 3rd quarter we came out much better against the zone and made 4 3's in the period, led by sophomore guard Brady Clemons, who scored 10 points in the quarter. We led 47-36 going into the final quarter.

In the 4th quarter we traded baskets with Trinity and won by 12, 67-55.

For the game we shot a miserable 32% compared to Trinity's 58%. We forced 19 turnovers while only committing 8 ourselves. The big difference came at the foul line as we made 26-33 while Trinity only made 8-12 attempts.

Brady Clemons was chosen as the K105 Player of the Game. He scored all 15 of his points in the second half. Aaron Deviney led us with 10 rebounds and Travis Johnston led with 7 assists.

Scoring:
Brady Clemons-15
Travis Johnston-14
Tyler Saltsman-13
Aaron Deviney-13
Hunter Gary-8
Dustin Thomas-2
Ethan Meredith-2Coach Johnstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607937586994949048noreply@blogger.com
