Freshman/JV game vs. Ohio County

The game for this Thursday has been cancelled. It will be made up on Monday, Feb. 1st, here at GCHS. The freshman game will begin at 6pm.

Make up game at Butler County

The make up game with Butler County will be this Saturday, Jan. 23rd. This will be a girl/boy doubleheader with the girls game beginning at 6:00 and the boy's game will follow.

Edmonson County

The rematch with Edmonson County was on Jan. 15th, in Brownsville. We came away with a 63-49 victory over the Wildcats. Edmonson came into the game with the region's best record at 11-3, but our quick start on Friday helped us get the win in Brownsville.

We got off to a great start in this game by jumping out 10-2 in the first few minutes. The early start was fueled by 3 pointers by Hunter Gary and Travis Johnston as well as layups by Brady Clemons and Tyler Saltsman. We took a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, we started very slowly in the second quarter which allowed Edmonson County go take a 15-14 lead and the only other lead they would have all night was at 17-16. During the second quarter Travis Johnston scored 9 points and Brady Clemons hit a big 3 in transition to give us a 26-20 lead at the half.

In the 3rd quarter all 5 starters scored as we build a 43-28 lead going into the 4th quarter. The only problem we had going into the 4th quarter was foul trouble. Travis Johnston picked up his fourth foul in the last minute of the 3rd quarter and Dustin Thomas, Aaron Deviney and Hunter Gary all had 3 fouls going into the 4th quarter.

In the fourth quarter we only attempted 2 shots from the field (making both), but we made 15-20 free throws in the fourth quarter, led by Travis Johnston who was 10-10 in the quarter and 15-15 for the game.

Brady Clemons and Hunter Gary both had very good games, mostly for the defensive effort during the game. Brady had 11 points and Hunter Gary had 8. Brady Clemons was chosen as the player of the game for his efforts.

Travis Johnston-28
Brady Clemons-11

In the second quarter we didn't play particularly well and Trinity closed the gap to 29-21 at the half. We slowly pulled away in the second half, winning the 3rd quarter 17-11 and the fourth quarter 18-11.

Apollo Game

We defeated the Eagles of Apollo on Tuesday night at Cougar gym by the score of 63-51. The win moves our record to 7-6 for the season.

Apollo has one of the biggest teams in the state with a 7'1 center and several players around 6'6 or bigger. Another player is a 300 lb center who has signed to play football with the University of Louisville. We knew going into the game that they would have the ability to score a lot of easy points in the paint with their size so we needed to have a good shooting night from the 3 point line to have a chance to win the game.

For the game we shot 22-38 from the field including 10-18 from the 3 point line and 9-12 from the free throw line. Apollo shot 23-46 for the game and 4-13 from the 3 point line but only 1-4 from the foul line. We out rebounded Apollo 28-16 for the game and committed 10 turnovers to Apollo's 7.

Travis Johnston was chosen as the Player of the Game for his 20 points (18 in the first half), 9 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Unfortunately, Travis dislocated the thumb on his shooting hand on the last play of the first half. He did play in the second half but was severely limited in what he could do. We also got outstanding performances by sophomore guard Brady Clemons who pitched in with 11 points (all in the second half). Tyler Saltsman had 13 points and 5 rebounds and Aaron Deviney scored 9 with 5 rebounds. Hunter Gary did a great job on Apollo's leading scorer, holding him to 8 points. Hunter also had 7 points and 4 rebounds.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-20
Tyler Saltsman-13
Brady Clemons-11
Aaron Deviney-9
Hunter Gary-7
Trey Tinsley-3

They turned the ball over with 5.6 seconds to play and we took the last shot, a 3 pointer from Brady Clemons as time expired. We took our first lead in the game at 67-66 when Hunter Gary nailed a 3 pointer from the wing with 2:30 to play in the OT. We never trailed again as Travis Johnston and Aaron Deviney hit some free throws down the stretch to give us the 72-68 overtime victory.
