Advanced Ticket Sales for Championship Game

There will be advanced ticket sales for Friday's district championship game vs Trinity. The tickets will go on sale today (Thursday) and will be on sale through Friday. The tickets are $5 dollars a piece. I would recommend buying the tickets in advance to keep from standing in a long line with no guarantee of getting in. Please come support us Friday night as we go for our 4th straight district title.

Opening Round of 12th District

We traveled to Whitesville on Tuesday, Feb. 24 to play in the opening round of the 12th District Tournament. We beat the Butler County Bears 64-37 to advance to the 3rd Region Tournament next week.

We started the game very sharp offensively and led 22-9 at the end of the first quarter. Lance Buckler scored the first 9 points of the game using his skills to score inside and outside. As a team we made 11-15 shots in the opening period. We stretched the lead to 33-16 at halftime but weren't nearly as sharp offensively hitting only 2 of 14 shots. Bennett Skaggs went 4-4 from the foul line in the second quarter and Hunter Gary hit a 3 pointer to lead us during the second period.

During the second half we stretched the lead out again and lead by 20 going into the fourth period. We played a lot of our younger players in the fourth quarter but still outscored Butler Co. 18-11 in the final period.

For the game we shot 22-49 from the field and 15-21 from the foul line. We pulled down 26 rebounds and committed 8 turnovers and had 15 assists. Butler County shot 11-23 from the field and made 12-24 free throws. They also committed 20 turnovers and pulled down 17 rebounds.

Bennett Skaggs was chosen as Player of the Game by scoring 15 points, pulling down 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Our next game will be Friday night at Trinity in the championship game vs either Edmonson Co. or Trinity. The game will start at 7:00. We will need a big crowd on hand to help us bring home our 4th straight district championship.

Senior Night

On Friday, Feb. 20th we had our last regular season home game against Hancock Co. We won the game 79-45 and our seniors all played a big part in our win. We will graduate 5 players from this year's team and they are: Bennett Skaggs, Wes Smith, Lance Buckler, Seth Bratcher and Ryan Grubs. The 5 seniors were our starters for this game but unfortunately with Wes Smith still hobbled by his severely sprained ankle he was just in for the tip off and then immediately taken out of the game. It is still unclear when Wes will return.

Seniors:
Bennett Skaggs had 5 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. A typical game from Bennett has he is our "jack of all trades." He also had 2 steals in his 19 minutes of playing time.

Lance Buckler pitched in with 14 points on 6-8 shooting including 2 of 3 from the 3 point line. Lance had 3 rebounds and 2 steals on the night as well.

Seth Bratcher scored 10 points and had 5 rebounds and 3 steals on the night.

Ryan Grubs was chosen as the Player of the Game for his career high 7 points on 2 of 3 shooting, including 1 of 2 from 3 point line and 2 of 2 from the foul line.

Wes Smith was only in for the tip off but his contributions have been numerous throughout this season. He is our second leading scorer and best defender. He hope Wes can make it back for the district and regional tournaments.

For the game, we shot 25-52 from the field for 48% and 17-24 from the ft line for 71%. We hit 12-26 3 pointers on the night for 46%. Hancock Co. shot 17-40 for 43% and 3-9 from the 3 point line. They also hit 8 of 15 ft's for 53%.

We won the rebounding battle 32-26 including a 14-7 advantage on the offensive boards.

Travis Johnston scored 24 points in the first half on 6-8 3 point shooting. He got us off to a great start and everyone else picked us up the rest of the game. When Hancock Co. went box and 1 on Travis, it opened up many opportunities for the other players and they took advantage of those opportunities.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-24
Lance Buckler-14
Seth Bratcher-10
Ryan Grubs-7
Bennett Skaggs-5
Hunter Gary-4
Tyler Saltsman-3

Ohio County Game

On Tuesday we traveled to Hartford to play Ohio Co. The girl's team got things off to a great start for us by defeating the Lady Eagles. It was big win for our girls and we made it a perfect night for our school by beating the Eagles 58-51.

In our game, we got off to a slow start against Ohio County's 3-2 zone and trailed 9-7 at the end of the first period. The second period things heated up quite a bit for both teams and we led at the break 30-28. In the second period we got 3 point baskets from Tyler Saltsman, Hunter Gary and Travis Johnston. Travis scored 13 second quarter points after being held scoreless in the first quarter.

We went on a 10-2 run at the start of the 3rd quarter. Tyler Saltsman scored 7 of those 10 points by hitting a 3 scoring on two post up moves. We led 50-41 going into the 4th period. We did not score a field goal in the 4th quarter but made 8-9 free throws to hold on to the victory.

For the game we shot 18-49 for 37% and 14-16 from the line for 88%. Ohio County shot very well from the field by hitting 18-32 for 56%. The difference in the game was we forced 24 turnovers in our half court man defense while we committed 12 turnovers. Although our shooting percentage was not good, we did make 8-19 from the 3 point line for 42%. Travis Johnston hit 3 3's as did Tyler Saltsman and Hunter Gary chipped in with 2 3's.

We out rebounded Ohio Co. 22-19 and we only gave up 2 offensive rebounds while getting 12 of our own. Lance Buckler led the team with 9 rebounds and Travis Johnston pulled down 5 boards.

Player of the Game was Travis Johnston, who scored 29 points.

Scoring:

District Tournament Pairings and Information

We will play Butler County at Trinity in the first round of the district on Tuesday, Feb. 24, beginning at 7:00 pm. Edmonson County will play Trinity at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 25th. The boy's championship game will be Friday, Feb. 27th at 7:00 pm.

As you know the Trinity gym is very small and they will not sale advanced tickets. I would encourage all of our fans to show up early to get in line to buy tickets. The doors will open up at 6:00 but if you plan on attending, I would show up 30-45 minutes before 6:00 to stand in line for tickets. I know this is not the ideal situation but it is out of our control.

If we win and play in the championship game on Friday night, the ticket situation will be much worse, especially if we play Edmonson County. Again, I would arrive very early to ensure a ticket for yourself and your family.

3 Games Last Week

We played 3 games last week losing at Meade County but winning at Bardstown and Trinity.

In the Meade County game, we played very poorly on both ends of the court. We allowed Meade County to shoot 52% from the floor and control the boards. We shot 26% for the game and were completed dominated inside by their post players.

We played without Bennett Skaggs who was out with a concussion and then we lost Wes Smith in the fourth quarter with a severely sprained ankle.

Hunter Gary was chosen as Player of the Game.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-16
Hunter Gary-10
Wes Smith-7
Seth Bratcher-7
Lance Buckler-6
Tyler Saltsman-2
Aaron Deviney-2
Dustin Thomas-2

In the Bardstown game, we followed up our worst performance of the year with possibly our best. Bardstown is the defending 5th region champion and have 4 starters returning from last year's team. Bardstown is a very tough place to play and is the type of game we need at this point in the year to get us tougher for the district and regional tournaments.

We played without the injured Wes Smith but luckily, we did get Bennett Skaggs back for this game. The biggest keys to the game was handling their pressure (only 7 turnovers for the game) and keeping them off the offensive boards (6 for the game). We also shot the ball very well in making 9-20 3 point shots.

Travis Johnston was chosen Player of the Game with his 32 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-32
Lance Buckler-10
Bennett Skaggs-8
Tyler Saltsman-6
Aaron Deviney-3
Hunter Gary-3
Seth Bratcher-2

In our last regular season district game we played at Trinity on Saturday night. We came away with a 57-40 win to finish 6-0 in our district play. We had a very balanced offensive night and got contributions from several players. We did not play particularly well on either end of the court.

Dustin Thomas was chosen Player of the Game. He only scored 2 points but pulled down 7 rebounds to go along with 1 assist and 1 steal.

Scoring:
Bennett Skaggs-13
Hunter Gary-11
Travis Johnston-8
Lance Buckler-7
Aaron Deviney-6

Varsity team loses at John Hardin

Friday night we traveled to John Hardin to play a very good Bulldog team. We played very lethargic throughout the game and lost 60-52.

John Hardin shot the ball very well in the first half by making 8-13 from the 3 point line against our zones. We played man to man in the second half and did a much better job defensively in limiting them to 1 3 point shot, but we had a hard time containing their inside play.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-18
Wes Smith-11
Lance Buckler-9
Aaron Deviney-9
Bennett Skaggs-5

Freshman Season is Over

The 3rd region coaches have decided to cancel the regional tournament for the freshman this coming weekend. With all the cancellations during the past 2 weeks of varsity games most teams are having make up games on Saturday.

Our freshman finished their season with an overall record of 8-8. I feel like this was a very successful season for our freshman. We lost Brady Clemons in early December and the season could have gone down hill from there, but the young men worked hard and continued to improve during the season.

Congratulations to Coach Basham and our freshman team for working hard and improving throughout the year.
