Butler County

In a game that had to be rescheduled due to a snow out in early January we defeated the Bears in Morgantown 83-38 on Saturday night. This win made our district record 4-1 (with one game left to play).

Coming off a big win the night before we were not sure what type of intensity we would come out with but our guys were ready to play from the beginning. We led 16-7 at the end of the 1st quarter but we held Butler County scoreless for the first 5:30 of the second quarter to take command of the game. We led 39-14 at the half. The 3rd quarter was the only quarter we allowed them to score double figures in but we still extended our lead to 62-29 going into the 4th quarter. We took our starters out with about 4 minutes to go in the 3rd and our younger guys continued to build the lead.

With our 6 jv guys getting all the playing time in the last quarter we still managed to win the quarter 21-9. We had several guys play extremely well off the bench including Daniel Buckles, Ethan Meredith and Dylan Vaught.

We were 33-60 from the field for 55%. We had 43 rebounds (Daniel Buckles had 10) and 16 team assists with Travis Johnston having 6. Butler County was 13-39 from the field for 33%, pulled down 28 rebounds and had 21 turnovers.

Muhlenberg County

On Friday, Jan. 22nd we played the #1 team in the region (according to Lit Ratings) and came away with a 57-54 victory over the Muhlenberg County Mustangs.

We jumped out to a quick 18-8 lead after the first quarter as Travis Johnston scored 7, Tyler Saltsman scored 5 and Brady Clemons had 4. In the second quarter the game changed drastically with about 3 minutes to play. We were leading by 12 but Muhlenberg went on a big run to cut the lead to 29-26 at the half.

In the 3rd quarter we traded baskets and Muhlenberg eventually took a 33-31 lead before we took the lead for good. We led 39-35 going into the 4th quarter.

We made enough plays down the stretch and while we didn't make very many free throws we did make enough to pull out the 3 point win. Our balance was the difference in the game as all 5 starters took turns making big plays for us.

For the game we shot 45% but were only 8-18 from the foul line. We committed 8 turnovers and won the rebounding battle. We pulled down 13 offensive rebounds to 5 for the Mustangs.

Travis Johnston had 22 points and 8 assists while Aaron Deviney just missed a double double with 8 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron was chosen Player of the Game.

Make up game at Butler County

Edmonson County

The rematch with Edmonson County was on Jan. 15th, in Brownsville. We came away with a 63-49 victory over the Wildcats. Edmonson came into the game with the region's best record at 11-3, but our quick start on Friday helped us get the win in Brownsville.

We got off to a great start in this game by jumping out 10-2 in the first few minutes. The early start was fueled by 3 pointers by Hunter Gary and Travis Johnston as well as layups by Brady Clemons and Tyler Saltsman. We took a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, we started very slowly in the second quarter which allowed Edmonson County go take a 15-14 lead and the only other lead they would have all night was at 17-16. During the second quarter Travis Johnston scored 9 points and Brady Clemons hit a big 3 in transition to give us a 26-20 lead at the half.

In the 3rd quarter all 5 starters scored as we build a 43-28 lead going into the 4th quarter. The only problem we had going into the 4th quarter was foul trouble. Travis Johnston picked up his fourth foul in the last minute of the 3rd quarter and Dustin Thomas, Aaron Deviney and Hunter Gary all had 3 fouls going into the 4th quarter.

In the fourth quarter we only attempted 2 shots from the field (making both), but we made 15-20 free throws in the fourth quarter, led by Travis Johnston who was 10-10 in the quarter and 15-15 for the game.

Brady Clemons and Hunter Gary both had very good games, mostly for the defensive effort during the game. Brady had 11 points and Hunter Gary had 8. Brady Clemons was chosen as the player of the game for his efforts.

Brady Clemons-11

In the second quarter we didn't play particularly well and Trinity closed the gap to 29-21 at the half. We slowly pulled away in the second half, winning the 3rd quarter 17-11 and the fourth quarter 18-11.

The player of the game was Aaron Deviney. Aaron had 9 points by going 3-4 from behind the 3 point arc, but also pulling down a game high 12 rebounds. Travis Johnston led with 6 assists and 4 steals.

Apollo Game

We defeated the Eagles of Apollo on Tuesday night at Cougar gym by the score of 63-51. The win moves our record to 7-6 for the season.

Apollo has one of the biggest teams in the state with a 7'1 center and several players around 6'6 or bigger. Another player is a 300 lb center who has signed to play football with the University of Louisville. We knew going into the game that they would have the ability to score a lot of easy points in the paint with their size so we needed to have a good shooting night from the 3 point line to have a chance to win the game.

For the game we shot 22-38 from the field including 10-18 from the 3 point line and 9-12 from the free throw line. Apollo shot 23-46 for the game and 4-13 from the 3 point line but only 1-4 from the foul line. We out rebounded Apollo 28-16 for the game and committed 10 turnovers to Apollo's 7.

Travis Johnston was chosen as the Player of the Game for his 20 points (18 in the first half), 9 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Unfortunately, Travis dislocated the thumb on his shooting hand on the last play of the first half. He did play in the second half but was severely limited in what he could do. We also got outstanding performances by sophomore guard Brady Clemons who pitched in with 11 points (all in the second half). Tyler Saltsman had 13 points and 5 rebounds and Aaron Deviney scored 9 with 5 rebounds. Hunter Gary did a great job on Apollo's leading scorer, holding him to 8 points. Hunter also had 7 points and 4 rebounds.

Scoring:
Travis Johnston-20
Tyler Saltsman-13
Brady Clemons-11
Aaron Deviney-9

Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic

After Christmas we played in one of the two toughest tournaments in Kentucky. We were invited to the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic. We won 1 game and lost 2 in during our stay in Lexington.

In the fourth quarter we tied the score at 61 with a minute to play and Mercer Co. decided to hold for the last shot. They turned the ball over with 5.6 seconds to play and we took the last shot, a 3 pointer from Brady Clemons as time expired. We took our first lead in the game at 67-66 when Hunter Gary nailed a 3 pointer from the wing with 2:30 to play in the OT. We never trailed again as Travis Johnston and Aaron Deviney hit some free throws down the stretch to give us the 72-68 overtime victory.

Aaron Deviney was chosen Player of the Game for his 18 points and 10 rebounds. We had a very balanced attack for the game with 3 players getting double-doubles.
